Petzl GRIGRI Belay Device

The Petzl GRIGRI is a compact belay device with cam-assisted blocking for lead and top rope climbing. It weighs just 175 g (6.2 oz) and works with dynamic single ropes from 8.5 to 11 mm, making it a practical choice for belaying in the gym or at the crag.

Key Features and Highlights

  • Cam-assisted blocking: When the climber falls or weights the system, the rope tightens and the cam pivots to pinch and block the rope.
  • Lead and top rope: One device for belaying both types of climbing.
  • Compact and lightweight: 175 g (6.2 oz), the lightest and most compact belay device with cam-assisted blocking in the Petzl range.
  • Wide rope range: Compatible with 8.5 to 11 mm dynamic single ropes, optimized for 8.9 to 10.5 mm.
  • Easy rope installation: A diagram engraved on the device shows how to thread the rope.
  • Ergonomic handle: Lets you unblock the rope and lower a climber with a smooth, controlled descent.
  • 3:1 mechanical advantage: The handle and camming mechanism reduce the effort needed to control the rate of descent, regardless of rope diameter.
  • Durable build: Aluminum side plates, stainless steel cam and friction plate, and a reinforced nylon handle.
  • Three colors: Available in blue, gray and red/orange.

Who Is This Product For?

Ideal for:

  • Climbers belaying lead and top rope routes
  • Indoor climbing gyms and outdoor crags
  • Climbers looking for a compact, lightweight belay device

Easy to Use

Feeding slack and catching falls use the same techniques as all Petzl belay devices, and you must always keep a hand on the brake side of the rope. The cam-assisted blocking gives you some leeway in brake hand position, whatever the angle between the climber side and brake side of the rope.

Important Safety Information

The GRIGRI is a belay device for rock climbing and is not designed for rope access work. It is designed for belaying or lowering a maximum of one person, and self-belaying is not authorized. Before use, read and follow the Petzl instructions for use and all technical information. You can also review the PPE inspection procedure.
